Vardaan Is Two Fast: Inside Vikrant Massey's Son's Race Car 2nd Birthday

Parties by PALC · A Second Birthday
Vardaan is two fast: a vintage race day in a Mumbai garden, softened in powder blue and cream.
A year after we styled Vardaan's first birthday, Vikrant Massey and Sheetal Thakur invited us back to celebrate his second. Being asked back is the nicest compliment we can receive, and it meant we could build on everything we had learnt about the family the first time round.
This year the family asked for a cars theme. We turned it into a vintage race day, leaned into the oldest pun in the toddler-party book, then took it somewhere quieter. Powder blue, cream and a measured dose of racing red replaced the usual primary-colour pit lane, so the afternoon felt playful for the little guests and polished for the grown-ups.

The Idea
A race day that still feels gentle
Race car parties can easily tip into loud reds and cartoon clutter. For a two-year-old we wanted the opposite: a calm, airy palette with just enough red to say “race day”. Each zone borrowed one element of a real race, the start line, the track, the pit stop and the fuel station, and translated it into something a toddler could touch, climb or taste.

No. 01
The starting line
Guests arrived through a drive-thru style arch with a “Start Your Engines” marquee arrow, a Route 02 road sign standing in for Vardaan's age and a cheeky “No Stopping Anytime” sign. Real tyres, a vintage fuel pump and organic balloon clusters framed the walk-through, with checkered pillars setting the race-flag motif from the very first step.

No. 02
The track
The hero of the garden was a looping road cut-out with little red cars mid-race, raised on a checkered platform and wrapped in a balloon garland in all four colours of the palette.

Lanterns overhead
Paper lanterns and festoon lights strung through the old trees gave the lawn a soft canopy by day and a warm glow as the evening set in, so the décor carried from the afternoon into dinner without a single change.
Every zone borrowed one moment from a real race and made it small enough for a two-year-old.
No. 03
Candy Shop meets Fuel Shop

Our favourite play on the theme: candy dispensers mounted on powder-blue fuel-pump pedestals, so the children “refuelled” on sweets. A giant red number 2 and a racing tyre filled with balloons anchored the station.
It quickly became the birthday boy's favourite spot.

No. 04
Room to play
Toddlers need movement, so we gave them a white bouncy castle dressed in a sweeping garland, a clear bubble dome and a ball pit of rainbow balls. Keeping the play equipment white let it sit inside the décor rather than compete with it, and more than one parent climbed in too.

No. 05
The little guests' table
Children sat on powder-blue chairs at tables laid with personalised checkered placemats and road-print runners dotted with toy race cars. Each place held a race car shaped plate topped with a pair of kids' sunglasses, a favour they could wear straight away.

No. 06
Dinner for the grown-ups
For the adults we switched to black linen, gold cutlery and low, lush centrepieces of white hydrangea, roses and chrysanthemums with a few powder-blue blooms. Each table carried a personalised stand with Vardaan's name and a number 2, alongside checkered favour boxes.
Look closely at those boxes: the V monogram on them is the emblem we created for Vardaan's first birthday, carried over as a small, quiet link between the two celebrations.

Two details made the tables personal. The table markers paired a fuel pump with a classic Mumbai auto-rickshaw, a small nod to home. And every centrepiece held a gingham frame with a different photograph of Vardaan and his family, each finished with a little vintage race car, so guests found a new memory at every table.

To Take Home
Ideas worth stealing
- Soften the palette. Swap bright primary red, yellow and blue for powder blue and cream, and use red only as an accent. It photographs beautifully and suits a garden setting.
- Make the age part of the story. A Route 02 sign, a racing number 2 or a “Two Fast” headline tells guests the theme at a glance.
- Turn the sweets into fuel. A candy or dessert table styled as a fuel station is simple to set up and the most-photographed corner of the party.
- Give favours a job. Kids' sunglasses and toy cars work as table décor before they go home as return gifts.
- Bring family photos to the table. A framed picture in every centrepiece makes a themed party feel personal.

Questions
Frequently asked
How do you plan a race car themed 2nd birthday party?
Start with a simple story: the start line, the track, the pit stop and the finish. Give each one a zone, such as an entrance arch, a race track backdrop, a candy “fuel station” and the cake table, then add play elements toddlers can enjoy, like a bouncy castle or ball pit.
What colours work best for a race car party?
Checkered black and white is the one must-have. For a softer, more elegant look, pair it with powder blue, cream and a touch of racing red, as we did for Vardaan.
